It seems the poles of difference between Kuta and Seminyak are forever growing wider apart. A quick look down at Kuta last week on a typical Wednesday night confirmed that Kuta is looking more like the Wild West every day. Between the road works, the dust and the mayhem, the central Jalan Legian/Poppies Two zone of Kuta has reached new levels of decadence and debauchery, but the punters at night, mostly young and mostly inebriated, appear to be loving every minute.
As half of the establishments there have the look of decaying into ruins before they’re even finished, the people still flock in by the thousand. Meanwhile, the über stylish and maybe sometimes pretentious Seminyak has been riding on a wave of development bringing with it a plethora of chic venues that are attracting an even chic-er crowd. There will always be the Kuta and the Seminyak crowd on this island, one styled in Bintang t-shirts, the other in Dsquared runners and the likelihood of them mixing becomes even more and more remote.
There was a time when new Kuta bar owners would say they want to bring up the level, they wanted to make more classy venues, but you don’t hear that anymore, it seems they have accepted their fate and the sweet sound of a ringing cash register, one Bintang at a time, is ruling the immediate future. Cheap flights to Bali are bringing thousands of limited budget punters every week and at some stage you get the feeling they will have to fence off central Kuta and let them have it. Fair enough, Kuta has always been that way and we loved having the option of having a pumping, grinding night out in sin city but personally I think it’s now going too far. Bring back a more stylish Kuta before it’s too late.
